Attendance
Attendance
At Grove School we believe that:

  • there is a link between regular attendance and academic achievement.
  • regular attendance encourages students to benefit from the whole range of curricular and extra curricular opportunities on offer.
  • full attendance is a duty and a crucial factor in determining personal responsibility and a good work ethic.

Illness - If a student is absent from school through illness, please contact the absence line on 01630 650 020.

Medical appointments - If a student has to leave school or will be absent from school due to a medical appointment, please write a note addressed to the attendnace officer.  Copies of appointments should also be submitted wherever possible.

Unexplained Absence - If a child is absent from school with no reason given, the attendance officer will contact you to confirm the reason for absence.

Absence from school in exceptional cerciumstances and Term Time holidays

It is known that missing school for any reason can cause a child to fall behind in their learning. Sometimes children will find it difficult to settle back into school after a break.

When children are taken out of school during the term time not only does the education of the individual child suffer, but it can cause disruption to the rest of the class with teachers having to repeat work and give extra help so that the pupil can catch up.

There are 190 school days in an academic year leaving 175 days free for families to take holidays. Not taking into account other absences, just taking a fortnight’s holiday each year means that, between the ages of 5 to 16, a child would miss around half an academic year of learning.

What does the law say?
As of 1 September 2013 there has been a change in the The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006. Where there used to be the option for Headteachers to grant leave of absence for the purpose of a family holiday during the term time in ‘special circumstances’ of up to ten days in a year, this has been removed.

Headteachers are now only allowed to authorise any leave of absence when an application has been made in advance and it is felt to be for an exceptional circumstance; the annual family holiday would not be deemed an exceptional circumstance.

If you have any queries relating to attendance, please contact our attendance officer, Mrs Lorraine Lovell:  lorraine.lovell@groveschool.net or via telephone on 01630 652121
